Esiweni Retains Two MICHELIN Guide Keys in 2026: An Exceptional Safari Stay in KwaZulu-Natal

Some news you read several times over, just to be sure. When The MICHELIN Guide published its very first hotel selection for South Africa, Esiweni was awarded Two MICHELIN Keys. In 2026, for the second year running, the inspectors have confirmed that distinction. For a lodge of only five suites, tucked into the hills of the malaria-free Nambiti Big Five Private Game Reserve, it is a deeply moving honour.

What Are the MICHELIN Keys?

For more than a century, the MICHELIN Stars have been the reference for great restaurants. In 2024, the Guide brought the same rigour to hotels by creating the Keys. Inspectors travel anonymously, book like any other guest and assess the entire stay, from the very first message to the final goodbye.

There are four levels of recognition: inclusion in the Selection, One Key (a very special stay), Two Keys (an exceptional stay) and Three Keys (an extraordinary stay). Two Keys distinguish a place of real character, run with pride, where every detail matters and a memorable experience is guaranteed.

The Five MICHELIN Criteria, Seen from Esiweni

A gateway to the destination. From Esiweni, the view sweeps across the hills of KwaZulu-Natal, in the heart of Zulu country. The local Zulu community holds shares in the company that owns the reserve, so every stay contributes to a shared future.

Architecture with character. Only five suites, each one facing the bush, designed so that the landscape remains the true centrepiece.

Consistent service and comfort. With so few guests, nothing is standardised. A surprise lunch by the river, a boma dinner under the stars, a ranger who knows exactly how you like your coffee at sunrise.

Remarkable value. Our fully inclusive stay covers your suite, all meals by our Chef Alex, two safaris a day, house wines and spirits, laundry and reserve transfers.

A unique personality. Esiweni is the only Relais & Châteaux property in KwaZulu-Natal, and a home where guests always get to meet the owners during their stay.

A Safari Built on Respect

Out in the reserve, our rangers read the animals first. An elephant shaking its head or moving its ears is asking for space, and we give it. At Esiweni, every sighting happens on the animal's terms, and we believe guests can feel that quiet respect.

To the Esiweni Family

These Two Keys are yours. To our rangers, who turn every drive into a story. To our Chef Alex and the kitchen team, also recognised among South Africa's Top 100 Restaurants. To housekeeping, the lodge management team, our gardeners, our mechanics and everyone behind the scenes who makes five suites feel like home. Thank you.

A Historic Moment for South Africa

The arrival of The MICHELIN Guide places South African safari lodges alongside the world's finest hotels. We are proud to stand among the country's distinguished properties, and grateful to every guest who has chosen to discover KwaZulu-Natal with us.

Arrived as Guests, Leaving as Friends

“Our guests often tell us as they leave: they arrived as guests and are leaving as friends. That is our greatest reward, and these Two Keys tell us we are on the right path.” Sophie Vaillant and Ludovic Caron, owners of Esiweni
